After the Storm - Writing Desk
This bespoke writing desk is made from 350 year old oak from the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh. The asymmetrical design is inspired by the American woodworker George Nakashima. Constructed throughout using traditional woodwork techniques it showcases Stephen's craft skills.
The desk features a slab of oak dovetailed together to create a waterfall desktop and end panel. Wooden butterfly keys bridge the large split which occurred when the tree blew down. This was during Cyclone Andrea which hit Scotland in 2012. The natural shape of the wood has been enhanced by precise chamfers cut onto the edge. The hand planed chamfers help to define the profile and emphasis the wood grain.
The square edged oak cabinet contrasts to the organic shape of the desktop. The three drawers have natural edge maple veneers applied to their fronts. This softens their geometric shape and compliments the organic character of the desktop. The top drawer is subdivided using thin cedar strips to create individual compartments. The cabinet base is arranged in a cross shape with a curved profile underneath. The desktop is joined to the cabinet via a wooden beam. This unites the two components yet maintains their distinct profiles and character.
