In-Flight - Console Table

A bespoke Console Table made from a slab of burr sycamore floating over an elm base. The inspiration for the design of this piece came from a single slab of burr sycamore.

Carefully considered woodwork has enhanced the natural organic beauty of the sycamore slab. Shallow tapers were handplaned to either end of the slab and facets cut along the front edge. This creates a more considered and refined feel to the organic shape.

To contrast with the organic top a precise framework was designed. Contrasting refined lines and handmade joinery against the organic shapes of the sycamore. The frame rakes outwards at 95 degrees and the end panel legs taper to a narrow point at the base. A suspended drawer box below the frame mirrors the top supported above it. Careful selection of native hardwoods creates harmony in the piece. The rich red brown of the elm compliments the warm creamy tones of the sycamore. Small accents of dark walnut add more focal points to draw the eye.

Visual tension is created by the precise frame against the natural organic shape of the top. The tapers and facets planed into the top reflect the angles of the framework and drawer box. This softens the visual tension and gives the piece balance.
